The #1 home energy company in Australia
The Australian Governments offers solar rebates and incentives to make switching to solar more affordable. Instead of claiming money back later, the rebate is applied upfront as a discount on the cost of your solar system.
Earn Certificates
Every kilowatt of solar you install earns Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs)
We Trade Them for You
Your accredited installer (like us at Smart Energy) trades these certificates on your behalf.
Instant Discount Applied
The value of those STCs is deducted from your quote immediately, so you pay less from day one.

For many homeowners, the federal battery rebate can reduce the upfront cost of installing an eligible home battery by thousands. The exact rebate depends on battery size, installation date, product eligibility and STC value.
Check EligibilityThe federal battery rebate can cut thousands off your install when you connect an eligible battery to new or existing rooftop solar. The catch: from May 2026 the rebate is tiered by battery size, so the wrong size battery leaves money on the table.
Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES) – Solar PV & Heat-pump Hot Water
Upfront discount via tradable STCs for eligible rooftop solar, solar water heaters and air-source heat-pump hot water. Value varies by system size, location and STC price.
The Cheaper Home Batteries Program (CHBP)
~30% upfront discount on small-scale batteries (5–100 kWh), delivered via SRES. 2025 rate: 9.3 STCs per usable kWh (= $372/kWh) for up to the first 50 kWh. Declines annually to 2030.
NSW – Connect your battery to a Virtual Power Plant (VPP)
Upfront VPP connection incentive (stackable with the Federal battery discount). From 1 Jul 2025, NSW increased the incentive for households & small businesses. Amount varies by battery size.
NSW – Upgrade your hot water (Heat-pump HWS)
Discount to replace electric or gas hot water with an energy-efficient heat-pump via accredited providers (Household Energy Saving Upgrades/ESS).
NSW – Upgrade your hot water (Heat-pump HWS)
Discount to replace electric or gas hot water with an energy-efficient heat-pump via accredited providers (Household Energy Saving Upgrades/ESS).
What changed with the battery rebate?
From 1 May 2026, the federal battery rebate changed to a tiered structure based on usable battery capacity.
For batteries installed from May to December 2026, eligible systems may receive:
- Up to approx. $272 per usable kWh for the first 14kWh
- Up to approx. $163 per usable kWh for capacity above 14kWh to 28kWh
- Up to approx. $41 per usable kWh for capacity above 28kWh to 50kWh
That means right-sizing your battery matters. Smart Energy can assess your solar production, household usage and savings goals to recommend a battery that gives you the best rebate and savings outcome for your situation.

Frequently asked questions
Most households in Australia qualify for solar rebates. Eligibility generally comes down to a few simple requirements: you need to own the home or have permission from the owner, the property must be connected to the electricity grid, and the system must be an approved solar or battery setup installed by a Clean Energy Council accredited installer. Rebates usually apply only to first-time installations at a property and to postcodes covered by the program, which includes most areas. Smart Energy handles the full eligibility check for you and can confirm exactly what you qualify for once we have your address and system details.
Yes, rebates can apply to solar batteries, but it depends on the program. The main federal rebate (STCs) applies to solar systems and can also reduce the cost of a battery when it is installed as part of a new solar system. Standalone battery rebates are only available in certain states when programs are active, and these can change over time. Smart Energy can confirm what battery incentives are currently available in your area and how much they can reduce your upfront cost.
Rebates are usually applied as an upfront discount so you don’t have to claim anything yourself. The value of the rebate is calculated based on your system size and location, then deducted directly from your quote before installation. This means the price you see already includes the rebate savings. Smart Energy handles all the paperwork and processing so the full benefit is built into your final cost.
The rebate process is usually quick because most of it happens behind the scenes. Once you confirm your system and installation date, your installer handles the paperwork and submits everything on your behalf. For federal rebates like STCs, the discount is applied immediately and does not require any waiting period. If a state program is available, approval times can vary, but Smart Energy manages the full process and keeps you updated so you know exactly when everything is finalised.
Yes, rebates can change each year. The federal STC rebate reduces slightly every January as the program phases down toward 2030, and the value can fluctuate based on market conditions. State-based programs can open, close, or update their rules depending on government funding. Because of these changes, many households choose to install sooner to secure the current rebate level. Smart Energy keeps track of all updates so you always know the latest incentives available in your area.
